Course Description | This course is designed to help students hone their English speaking skills in the context of academia and overall English oral abilities on various occasions. They also will learn about what makes a great academic presentation and also the common mistakes to avoid, not just when giving speeches, but also speaking English in general. Topics such as proper formats of Powerpoint slides, how to organize the contents of a presentation, the proper language to use, how to describe charts, how to talk about big numbers, how to improve their intonation and sound more like native speakers, how to maintain good eye contact and good body language, how to avoid using filler words excessively will also be touched upon. They will also be exposed to Think on Your Feet speech plans so they can give organized responses to any topics right "on their feet." Excerpts from American Accent Training by Ann Cook will also be used in this class to expose students to the right intonation patterns. A manual compiled by the instructor will be used. Speaking assignments will be given (They are called VR--video relays). Also, everyone will have opportunities to give a presentation to apply what they've learned in this class. |

Every one will have to deliver a presentation this semester: (10-12 minutes long with mostly pictures on your slides; use only few texts. No scripts or notes are allowed on stage. You’ll have to include charts/statistics and use academic English. If you have a video to show us, make sure it’s less than one minute long) Mid-term exam/Final exam (with a 1 minute oral test in the final exam) Video Relay (VR™); in-class oral responses (we will practice Think on Your Feet Structure Plans); shadowing recording homework (submit it to the iLearning platform); NBC Nightly News Quizzes class participation and VR: 40% individual speech/presentation/shadowing recording homework: 20% mid-term exam (IELTs listening questions): 20% final exam (TOEFL listening questions): 20% |
