Course Description Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) materials represent a groundbreaking paradigm shift in the field of luminescent materials. Unlike conventional fluorophores, which tend to lose their luminescence when aggregated, AIE materials exhibit the fascinating property of becoming highly luminescent when brought together in close proximity. This unique behavior stands in stark contrast to traditional fluorophores, where aggregation often leads to a phenomenon known as aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). ACQ has limited the practical applications of many luminescent materials, especially in densely packed or concentrated environments.
The discovery of AIE phenomenon has opened up a new realm of possibilities in various scientific and technological applications. AIE materials emit intense fluorescence upon aggregation, making them exceptionally valuable in fields such as bioimaging, biosensing, optoelectronic devices, and smart materials. The fundamental principle behind AIE lies in the restriction of intramolecular motion upon aggregation, preventing non-radiative decay processes and allowing the efficient emission of light.
