Course Description This course is an introduction to the field of linguistics, the scientific study of human language. We will survey major subfields of the disciplines: morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonetics, phonology, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics. We will learn grammatical structures, sound systems, the historical development of languages, and language universals. Further investigations include how human languages are structured, how they function in society, how language is acquired by children and adults, how the world’s languages are different and similar, how language is connected to human biology and culture, how linguistic diversity functions in the society, and how languages become endangered.
