Course Description | Pronunciation is the very first step to mastering a language. This course has a straightforward aim: to help students develop skills to improve their pronunciation. To achieve this goal, we will start with the fundamental and essential steps, the main sounds of English, to lay a solid foundation for correct pronunciation in English. Then we will expand the practice to connecting words with other parts of a speech: word stress, sentence stress, intonations, pausing and chunking, and the rhythming of a talk. General strategies: Sounds are the first part of pronunciation skills, but pronunciation is not just sounds: it’s about using your body to produce sounds, and it’s also about connecting sounds in ways that your speech/talk generates understandable, meaningful, and expressive impacts. As such, we will adopt diversified approaches to help students, including: Connecting with your body Finding your weak areas Using minimal pairs Basic recording strategy (most importantly) Using APPs, the latest learning technology |

1. Participation: 20% (2% deduction for each absence) 2. 10 in-class practices (w/recordings): 40% (4% each) 3. Midterm Exam: 20% 4. Final Project: 20% Midterm Exam & Final Project: The two exams/projects will be based on a checklist that contains the elements we discussed for pronunciation. Students will be assessed if these elements are properly observed. |
