| Course Description | The course is designed to introduce IBPA freshmen to English communication through structured listening tasks and guided discussions on a wide range of topics. Students will be supported in developing stronger listening comprehension and oral fluency, while also gaining cultural awareness of the English-speaking world. The course emphasizes techniques for strengthening auditory memory and acquiring natural English intonation through shadowing. Homework is expected, including regular neo-shadowing recording assignments. Students will also receive training in identifying lexical chunks in spoken English. Short listening quizzes will be administered at the end of each class to reinforce learning and assess progress. No textbook will be used. Various Youtube videos will be used for chunk-hunting, neo-shadowing, debates and other in-class activities. The complete list of videos will be announced as the semester starts. Classroom Policies 1. Please attend classes on time. Please arrive before 1:15 P.M. Being late once is equivalent to one absence. Three absences will seriously hurt your participation score. If you have a valid excuse for being late or absent, you can send me an email as a heads-up but you’ll still have to use the university online leave application system. 2. Your attendance score = quiz + recording homework completion percentage (show you what I can see on iLearning.) + participation of in-class activities 3. We will have IELTs and TOEFL-iBT real tests as parts of mid-term and final exams. You will be well-equipped for taking these exams in the future when you plan to take them for being an exchange student overseas or applying for graduate schools. |

| This course aims to develop IBPA freshmen’s listening and speaking skills across a broad range of contexts. Students are expected to devote time each week to homework and independent practice. In addition, the course will introduce selected listening materials from IELTS and TOEFL iBT to familiarize students with standardized academic English. |

| Classroom Materials: No text book. We’ll use Youtube videos for classroom activities and homework. Videos chosen for your presentation. Each of you will give an oral presentation supplemented by video materials. In quizzes, we will have videos from NBC Nightly News or other news sources and do blank filling questions (we’ll have a quiz today and for all the rest of the classes this semester). |
