This course is particularly designed for students to understand the working principles of a computer, a cell phone and Internet. The design and working principles behind a processor will be introduced. Concepts regarding software, program and instructions will be elucidated. The design and working principles of computer network and Internet will be delineated. Algorithm design together with C programming language will be introduced.

Written assignments and programming assignments (10 assignments altogether) will be given to the students to examine their level of understanding of those knowledge disseminated in the lectures. Moreover, two class tests will be conducted. One is scheduled in the first half of the semester, while the other is scheduled in the second half.

The primary objective of this course is to provide introductory knowledge for student knowing how to use a computer including how to write a simple program to instruct the computer to solve problems. Students will also learn to understand the working principles of computer technologies, inlcuding (i) how a computer is organized and (ii) how Internet works. Moreover, students are able to appreciate the great ideas contributed by the computer scientists and realize the usages of computer technologies in various areas such as in smart phones and cars.
