1. Attendance is mandatory, and all absences must be excused with advance notice and for verifiable reasons. All leaves will negatively impact attendance scores.
2. Students’ performance will be determined by their participation and overall effort in class. Students can earn extra credits by volunteering to respond to questions in class.
3. The Language Center at NCHU will administer a written English Proficiency Pre-Test to be taken in class. The test assesses students’ listening and reading comprehension. Since this course primarily focuses on enhancing speaking proficiency, students who wish to prepare for this test by taking relevant courses may want to explore alternative options.
4. To support the statistical operations of the Bilingual Education Resource Center, the Language Center requires all students to complete a self-directed learning task on the EnglishScore app. Students must log in through the designated link and complete all four assigned tests by Week 12. Submissions after the deadline will not be counted.
5. Instead of having a midterm and a final exam, students must complete four tasks throughout the semester. Students overwhelmed by the constant need to prepare for exams should consider exploring alternative courses at the same level.
6. The four tasks evaluate students’ speaking abilities individually and in interactive settings.
— In the independent tasks, students are expected to develop and deliver a short argument based on their personal opinions.
— In the interactive tasks, students must work with others in pairs to complete designated tasks. The instructor will determine all pairings. Students uncomfortable with this arrangement should reconsider enrolling in this course.
7. For the independent tasks, students will be evaluated based on the structure of their speech, the progression and development of their ideas, the unity and coherence of their thoughts, and their use of language. For the interactive tasks, students will be evaluated based on their discussions’ structure, dynamics, content, unity, and coherence.
