課程簡述 | This course “Basics of English Academic Reading” is designed for college students to cultivate and improve their reading ability in terms of synthetic comprehension and understanding of academic topics and scenarios by means of the training of highlighted skills of analysing the article structure and the author’s argumentation, grasping the main idea, making inferences, summarisation, paraphrasing, conjecturing cause-effect causality, etc. | ||||

This course “Basics of English Academic Reading” aims to develop students’ ability of reading articles of academic topics and scenarios by means of having materials from academic journals and TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language). The training of reading skills will cover, from the bottom to the top, the analysis of syntax, sentence structure and clauses, the extension of word bank based on word pre-fix, root, suffix and the comprehension of essay format and the author’s argumentation for developing the ability of analytical and critical thinking. Meanwhile, as TOEFL is based on academic purpose and scenarios, students are also requested to take TOEFL mini-test in class each week as the practical implementation of training. |
