Course Description The course introduces newly developed technologies including but not limited serological based methods and nucleic acid amplification methods. The principles, experimental design, and clinical applications will be introduced.

Research of public health and epidemiology requires a large number of laboratory techniques and diagnostic methods. Therefore, the purpose of this course is to equip students the principles and applications of common and novel laboratory diagnostic techniques. This lecture will help students to understand the diagnosis of infectious diseases and disease control.

Week 1 Immunoassays (I): Immunoblot analysis and Immunofluorescence assay (IFA)
Week 2 Immunoassays (II): ELISA and hemagglutination (HA)
Week 3 Immunoassays (III): lateral flow device assay (LFA)
Week 4 Preparation of monoclonal antibody and therapeutic antibody
Week 5 Nucleotide amplification-based methods (I)
Week 6 Nucleotide amplification-based methods (II)
Week 7 Nucleotide amplification-based methods (III)
Week 8 Allele-Specific Mutation Detection by PCR-ARMS
Week 9 Mid-term Discussion (techniques selected for self-practice)
Week 10 Oligonucleotide Ligation Assays for the Diagnosis of Inherited Diseases
Week 11 isothermal amplification (I): NASBA
Week 12 isothermal amplification (II): Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP)
Week 13 isothermal amplification (III): rolling circle amplification (RCA)
Week 14 isothermal amplification (III): Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA)
Week 15 isothermal amplification (IV): helicase-dependent amplification (HDA)
Week 16 Panel Discussion (techniques selected for self-practice)
Week 17 Design and conduct one selected serological method. (2-page Report required)
