Evaluation
III. Course Requirements and Assignments: The grading is based on the following requirements:
1. Your English (15%) & Chinese (15%) Resume: Each of you will be asked to browse through job hunting websites to scope your job market, look for potential job openings that interest you or fit your professional career path, and finally match your job search. Then, you will write your own Chinese & English résumés to fit the principles discussed in class. Before submitting these written assignments to me, please carefully proofread them as these two writing assignments will be graded based on how you present yourself in writing and how you EDIT them.
2. Your English (15%) & Chinese (15%) Cover Letter: After writing your own résumés, I will introduce Chinese & English cover letters that are used to supplement your resumes and attract your potential employers to call for an interview. Following the principles discussed in class, you will tailor your own Chinese & English cover letters. Again, before submitting these written assignments to me, please carefully proofread them as these two writing assignments will be graded based on how you present yourself in writing and how you EDIT them.
3. Your English Interviews (10%): After your résumés and cover letters are complete, you will go back to the job hunting websites you’ve browsed through to read carefully about what requirements the employers are specifically looking for these job openings. You will prepare English interviews for these job vacancies after my introduction to interview skills. I will conduct one on one job interview for very individual student in class, and your performance will be graded.
4. Your English Business Letter (15%): You will learn about writing an English business letter via email and be introduced to its format and writing styles. Then you will submit a printed copy of your letter in English Business writing style to be graded next class. Your grading is based on how you present yourself in writing and how you EDIT them.
5. NTCU Campus Tour (15%): After we discuss about receiving international guests, I will introduce what to prepare before giving an English workplace tour, steps for giving a tour, and the Do’s and Don’ts of giving office tours. Then you will form a group of 4-6 persons to give a campus tour on a designated area of the NTCU campus for around 5-7 minutes using the techniques or languages we discussed in class. It’s fair that everyone in the same group receives the same grade.
6. Attendance: Attendance is very important in this course. Please follow these rules: You can have up to 2 excused absences and 1 unexcused absence. If you miss more than this, you will fail the course. Excused absences must be requested through the student leave system and approved by the instructor. Unexcused absences do not need approval, but you can only have one.
