A familiar street, a neighborhood temple, or an everyday bowl of food may hold a story waiting to be discovered. Tourism English is not simply about introducing attractions. It is about seeing a place with fresh eyes, discovering a culture worth remembering, and using English to invite people from different backgrounds into its story. The course follows a three-part learning journey: See Home Anew, Encounter the World, and Return with New Eyes. In the first half of the semester, the instructor will demonstrate how a Taiwanese cultural topic can be developed into a complete English curated tour. Students will then create their own Taiwan-based projects and learn to speak for their culture. In the second half, the same cultural question will be explored through an international example, allowing students to examine how different societies understand, preserve, and represent culture before creating their own overseas cultural-site projects. Through observation, research, story selection, English interpretation, route planning, and guided-tour practice, students will learn to use space, sequence, pace, and interaction to create cultural encounters that inspire curiosity, understanding, and emotional connection. Generative AI will support research, story development, visitor simulation, and English revision, while students learn to verify information, identify bias, and maintain their own cultural voice and judgment. Selected topics from Taiwan’s foreign-language tour guide and tour leader assessments—including tourism interpretation, tourism resources in Taiwan and around the world, tourist psychology, international etiquette, itinerary planning, travel safety, and oral communication—will also be integrated into the course. |
