Course Description This course will include the following subtopics:
Types of biological control, targets, and agents.
Parasitoid diversity and ecology
Predator diversity and ecology.
Weed biocontrol agent diversity and ecology.
Arthropod pathogen diversity and ecology.
Classical biological control/Steps for importation of natural enemy.
Foreign exploration.
Climate matching.
Non-target impacts of biological control agents.
Natural enemy evaluation.
Conserving biological control agent in crops.
Use of Arthropod pathogens as pesticides.
Biological control in greenhouses.

The major aim of this course will focus on the strategies and techniques for implementing biological control as well as application of microbial control. Besides, the mass-rearing of natural enemies and mass-production of microbials will also be introduced.

Week Course Content
Week 1 Introduction of Biological Control.
Week 2 Three major strategies for implementation of biological control.
Week 3 Parasitoid diversity and ecology.
Week 4 Predator diversity and ecology.
Week 5 Weed biocontrol agent diversity and ecology.
Week 6 Arthropod pathogen diversity and ecology.
MOA of GVs and NPVs.
Week 7 Arthropod pathogen diversity and ecology.
MOA of Bacteria and nosema.
Week 8 Arthropod pathogen diversity and ecology.
MOA of Nematodes and fungi.
Week 9 Classical biological control/Steps for importation of natural enemy.
Cases of foreign exploration-How to evaluate the potential of control agents.
Week 10 Effects of biological and non-biological stresses on natural enemies and entomopathogens.
Cases of climate and chemicals.
Week 11 Conserving biological control agent in crops.
Cases of good agricultural practices and bank plants in neighboring landscape.
Week 12 Establishing the mass rearing system for predators and how to use predacious insects as pest-controlling agents in cost-effective manner.
How to promise the suitable package and storage conditions for natural enemies.
Week 13 Establishing the mass production system for entomopathogens:
Cases of Bt, fungi, nematode, and NPV.
Week 14 How to apply the arthropod pathogens as pesticides in the right way.
What conditions or factors should be taken into consideration?
Week 15 Commercialization of entomopathogens in powerful process or application of microbial pesticides in correct method? (Formulation and shelf life should be considered for keeping their bio-activity?)
Week 16 Utilization of natural enemies within an IPM program, successful cases in Taiwan and other countries.
Cases study for all the students.
Week 17 The problems in developing on technique of monitoring the sustainable efficacy of biological control.
Cases of conserving biological control.
Week 18 Term examination for all students.
Evaluation
Short oral report in every class (50%) + Term Examination (50%)
