The objective of this course is to provide a fundamental understanding of the mechanical behavior of engineering materials based on atomic bonding, structure, defects, and phase diagrams. The course examines strengthening mechanisms in metals and polymers, mechanisms of mechanical failure including fracture, fatigue, and creep, and how composite properties are controlled by their constituents.
