Course Description This course explores how sustainable citizenship can be fostered from early childhood through art, picture books, play, inquiry, and meaningful action. Viewing picture books as a multimodal art form, students will examine how words, images, stories, and creative expression can make complex sustainability issues accessible and meaningful to young children. The course addresses the environmental, social, economic, and cultural dimensions of sustainability, including climate change, biodiversity, responsible consumption, social justice, and information and misinformation. Through picture-book analysis, experiential learning, and collaborative design, students will explore how art and storytelling can foster children’s curiosity, critical thinking, empathy, hope, and agency, empowering them to participate in building a more sustainable future.
