Course Description This course offers an introduction to European literature from antiquity to the Renaissance, exploring how major works of art and literature reflect shifting cultural values, historical contexts, and human concerns. Students will engage with enduring themes such as fate, mortality, faith, love, and human creativity. Complementary study of European art and film further deepens students’ understanding of how literature has shaped and been shaped by broader cultural expressions.

Evaluation
1.Midterm Assignment (20%)
Curate and present either a European Literary Film Festival or a Literary Book Exhibition for your imagined bookstore, as if participating in a major event such as the Taipei International Book Exhibition (TiBE). Your project should be grounded in the themes and texts from our syllabus and include an AI-assisted promotional poster. Students are encouraged to think creatively about curation, audience engagement, and thematic coherence.
2.Final Assignment (20%)
Create and present a PowerPoint or podcast (using NotebookLM or similar tools) exploring a topic from the reading list. Your presentation should demonstrate thoughtful engagement with the material, including memorable quotations from the work, and offer a creative interpretation or comparative analysis of the selected work.
3.In-Class Review Quizzes (40%)
Regular quizzes will assess comprehension of key texts, themes, and concepts discussed in class.
4.Class Participation (20%)
Active participation in discussions and review sessions is expected. The final grade may be adjusted based on engagement. Unexcused absences will result in point deductions, while consistent contributions may earn bonus points.
Course Policies:
•Attendance is mandatory. Unexcused absences will negatively affect your grade.
•Late assignments will not be accepted unless prior arrangements are made.
•Academic integrity is essential. Plagiarism will result in a failing grade.
