Course Description | This course gives students the opportunity to read some of the most enduring literary works in Western literature. It explores the generic development of popular literature in nineteenth-century Britain. It introduces the major themes and issues of five literary works: Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1813), Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847), Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet (1887), as well as George and Weedon Grossmith’s The Diary of Nobody (1892). It encourages students to think about the reasons why these works became “popular” in the nineteenth century and remain so even today. | ||||
