Course Description This course explores fantasy literature's rich and diverse genre, examining its historical development, major themes, and cultural significance. Students will read and analyze seminal works of fantasy, exploring how these texts reflect and challenge societal norms and the ways in which they construct fantastical worlds.

Week 1 9/11 Overview of the course and syllabus, video viewing, calling for a volunteer for AI assistance, registering the mock tribunal.
You may use whatever helps you approach, understand, and enjoy the texts.
Week 2 What is fantasy and fantasy literature: definition and characteristics, historical development of the genre
Week 3 Introduction to fantasy literature: general
Week 4 Introduction to fantasy literature: children’s literature, The Wizard of Oz, etc.
Week 5 The hero’s journey and coming of age in FL: Harry Potter
Week 6 World-building and imaginary lands: The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien
Week 7 The Lord of the Rings
Week 8 Allegorical elements and their significance in FL: Animal Farm
Week 9 11/6 Animal Farm continued + 11/9 Self-learning activity: attending the tribunal for future generations—”Can AI be made an ally of democracy?”
Week 10 Magic realism, socio-political and cultural themes in FL: One Hundred Years of Solitude百年孤寂
