Course Description This one-semester course is open to second-year (and above) undergraduates. It offers a historical and cultural survey of English literature from the Medieval period to the early seventeenth century. The course aims to guide students in critically exploring both the continuities and changes in language, genre, content, form, style, and more that shaped literary works from these periods.

Students will be encouraged and supported in engaging with selected texts, from the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, through the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, to those of sixteenth-century English writers. Both in-class and out-of-class individual or group activities will involve interactive tasks designed to help students uncover a picture of the past and reconsider its relevance to the present.
