Course Description This course is an introduction to the field of linguistics, the scientific study of human language. We will survey major subfields of the disciplines: morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonetics, phonology, sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, language acquisition, psycholinguistics, and neurolinguistics. We will learn grammatical structures, sound systems, the historical development of languages, and language universals. Further investigations include how human languages are structured, how they function in society, how language is acquired by children and adults, how the world’s languages are different and similar, how language is connected to human biology and culture, how linguistic diversity functions in the society, and how languages become endangered. We will learn tools and methods linguists use to describe and analyze languages.

1. Analyze a basic set of linguistic data, give appropriate parameters, and solve a simple syntactic or phonological problem.
2. Explain the basic principles in human languages and how the meaning of language relates to speech acts, and supply basic examples.
3. Be familiar with International Phonetic Alphabet symbols for sounds and write messages in IPA.
4. Define crucial terms in our dialect and language, and describe the factors that would determine whether we call a given variety a language.
5. Define the difference between linguistic competence and performance.
6. Identify the subfields of linguistics and explain what each is concerned with.
