Course Description This course is the overseas service-learning module of the “Globalization and Humanistic Solicitude” curriculum. It centers on intergenerational learning and digital health, promoting hands-on community engagement, elder care experiences, cultural exchange, and the practice of social responsibility.

Students will participate in site visits, health promotion activities, and forum presentations, learning to integrate humanistic values, digital innovation, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to develop a global outlook and practical local impact.

To complement and deepen students’ experiential learning in this overseas service-learning module, the following self-directed learning activities are incorporated:

1. Digital Health and Elderly Care:
Reading: Taiwan Ministry of Health and Welfare – White Paper on Smart Healthcare (PDF)
Learning Objective: Understand the challenges and opportunities in applying digital technologies to elderly care in rural areas.

2. Cross-Cultural Communication and Teamwork:

Learning Objective: Reflect on cultural perspectives I may have previously misunderstood.

3. SDGs and Medical Ethics:
Reading: Introduction to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Traditional Chinese version from the official SDG website)

4. BMJ Global Health:
Article: “Why SDG 3 Matters to Every Clinician”
Learning Objective: Identify relevant SDG targets connected to this course’s fieldwork and suggest actionable strategies.

Evaluation
1. Class and Pre-departure Participation – 15%
Includes class attendance, preparation, participation in online discussions, cultural sensitivity, and teamwork.

2. Overseas Service and Fieldwork Performance – 35%
Involves on-site participation in healthcare visits, interaction with the elderly, engagement in forum activities, execution of team tasks, and documentation skills.

3. Group Project Report – 20%
Includes creation of a team website, poster, or presentation after the trip, assessing teamwork and content completeness.

4. Individual Reflection and Learning Journal – 20%
Includes weekly reflection logs, final reflection report after returning, observations on cultural differences, and integration of SDG-related health issues.

5. Service-Learning Mentor Evaluation – 10%
Feedback from instructors and host institutions on students’ professionalism, communication skills, willingness to collaborate, and overall performance.
