The main objective of Oral Training I is to advance students English speaking skills and critical thinking skills. Working in small groups of 3 or 4, students discuss questions related to authentic news articles from western periodicals the students have read. Each week a team of students will be responsible for writing the discussion questions used in the class. The articles used in the course are from past classes as well as the current class.
Some secondary objectives of the class include enhancing the students reading skills as well as developing their cultural and current events awareness based on the readings. Finally, one other objective of the class is to develop the students’ confidence in reading authentic western publications so that they might continue to do so after completing the course.

Week 1 |
In order to maximize students speaking opportunities, a communicative approach to language learning is used in the class. As mentioned above, students work in small groups to discuss the articles. At the same time, the teacher is moving between the groups to hear the different discussions, answer any questions that the students might have, or to add to the discussions. Additionally, the teacher is continually putting questions on the blackboard that the student team wrote in order to keep the conversation flowing.
Example topics of articles chosen by the student teams include solar energy, China’s one-child policy, sexual orientation, and using atomic weapons.

Participation 40%, 2 Exams at 30% = 60%
The participation grade is based on the teacher’s observation of the student’s daily class involvement. Students must be focused on the topic and actively participating in the discussion of the article.
There are 2 exams per semester. Students work in pairs to have a discussion based on question given by the teacher. During the students’ discussion, the teacher is evaluating the students speaking ability including their pronunciation, grammar vocabulary, fluency, and content.
