Course Description This course is designed to be student-centered and performance-based, prioritizing your active production of language over passive listening. The curriculum begins by cultivating your practical self-expression skills, subsequently providing you with effective, evidence-based strategies for engaging in meaningful, layered conversations. You are required to execute both independent and interactive communication tasks by directly applying the rhetorical skills and conversational strategies mastered in class. To maximize your immersive exposure to authentic discourse, approximately 95% of the course—including all lectures, peer discussions, and classroom instructions—will be conducted strictly in English.

1. Attendance is mandatory and intrinsically linked to your active participation in this performance-based environment. You are expected to be present and prepared for every scheduled session. Please be explicitly advised that regular attendance is a baseline requirement; consequently, points will be deducted based on your total number of absences, regardless of official leaves or advance notifications. Because this course relies on immediate, live interaction, any absence—excused or otherwise—directly reduces your opportunity to engage in the required tasks and will negatively impact this 15% category of your final grade.

2. Your performance grade under this 15% category is determined strictly by your active oral participation and meaningful engagement in class. Passive presence is insufficient to earn full credit. However, you can proactively secure extra credit by consistently volunteering to respond to in-class activities.

3. The Language Center at NCHU will administer an in-class, written English Proficiency Pre-Test designed to evaluate your listening and reading comprehension. Please note that this baseline diagnostic test is a mandatory component of the course. Because the primary objective of this specific curriculum is strictly limited to enhancing your oral speaking proficiency, this course does not provide instruction or preparation for listening and reading. If you are seeking training in these receptive skills, or if you do not agree to this evaluation framework, you are strongly advised to drop this course during the add/drop period.

4. To support the statistical operations of the Bilingual Education Resource Center at NCHU, you are required to complete a mandatory self-directed learning task on the EnglishScore application. You must authenticate your account through the designated link and independently complete all four assigned test components by the end of Week 12. Absolutely no extensions will be granted, and any submissions after the deadline will automatically receive a score of zero. If you do not agree to fulfill this requirement, you should drop this course during the add/drop period.

5. Rather than relying on traditional midterm and final examinations, this course utilizes a continuous assessment model comprising four major speaking tasks distributed throughout the semester. This cumulative structure is designed to evaluate your progressive language production in real time. Because this format demands consistent, ongoing preparation and high-frequency performance, you must be prepared to manage a continuous workload. If this rigorous assessment framework does not align with your study habits, or if you prefer a traditional exam schedule, you are strongly advised to drop this course during the add/drop period.

6. The four tasks evaluate your oral proficiency both individually and within interactive environments.
— For the independent tasks, you are expected to formulate and deliver a concise, logical argument based on their personal opinions.
— For the interactive tasks, you must collaborate in pairs to complete designated communicative objectives. Please be explicitly advised that all pairings are determined entirely at the instructor’s discretion, and these arrangements are non-negotiable. If you are uncomfortable with randomized peer collaboration, or if you do not agree to this structural requirement, you are strongly advised to drop this course during the add/drop period.

7. Within this framework, your independent tasks will be evaluated based on the organizational structure of your speech, the logical progression and development of your arguments, the unity and coherence of your discourse, and your precise use of the English language. Your interactive pair performances will be judged on the structural alignment of your discussion, the communicative dynamics between partners, the substance of your content, and the overall unity and coherence of your collective exchange.
