課程簡述 This course aims to guide students reading popular texts through critical lenses and creative reproductions. Through an immersive teaching method, students will delve into the captivating narratives, analyze the themes, and study the cultural impact of these works, which include fiction, films, short stories. Popular literature is often produced for massive consumption and lucrative gains; therefore, it tends to cater to popular taste and easy consumption. To do this, it both relies upon and re-enhances stereotypical images and conventional values. As a medium which conveys conservative values and conventional norms in regard to gender, sex, race, class, and cultural difference, popular literature tends to frame the stereotypical images of men vs. women, hero vs. villain, the West vs. the East, heterosexual vs. homosexual, etc. from a hierarchical perspective, often with bias. We will try to explore how these stereotypical images get established through certain in-grained cultural narratives in a certain cultural historical context. Our purpose of the class is to tease out these textual mechanisms by finding how they form readers’ identification with the characters and the plots and learn to read them against the grains. You are encouraged to read the texts from two perspectives: first, as a common reader/viewer, second, as a critical reader/viewer, so as to be conscious of the working of these textual mechanisms. The genres we will cover include: spy narrative, modern romance, chick literature, fantasy and science fiction. The course encourages critical thinking and engages students in lively discussions, creative activities, and interactive projects.
