課程簡述 This course focuses on the main constituents of marine planktonic food web. We will explore their functional roles in marine ecosystems, including their distribution, abundance, production, and mortality. We will also study the processes governing these functional roles and the impacts of these functional roles on biogeochemical cycling in marine ecosystems.

The last month of the semester is dedicated for discussion sessions, in which students are expected to read and present a paper related to either their own research topic or their interested marine ecology topics.

Students are expected to be exposed to contemporary research on marine ecosystems, especially on planktonic food webs. The discussion section of this course would further train students to (1) lead and participate in scientific discussions to collaboratively achieve the goal above, and (2) place their own ecology research in the relevant context.

For weeks assigned for paper presentation and discussion, students will read and present a paper related to either their own research topic or their interested marine ecology topics. The discussion will be structured as follows.
Before the class
1. Everyone will read the assigned papers and submit their answers to the following questions on ilearning (complete one day before class)
a. Which paragraph do you find most interesting or illuminating?
b. Which paragraph do you find most confusing or unclear?
c. What open-ended question relating to the papers would you pose to the class for discussion to identify a new research direction?
2. Discussion leaders
a. Prepare a 20-min presentation about the historical context and contemporary relevance of the papers
b. Make 3 discussion questions based on the answers submitted by everyone

In the class
20 min – Presentation by discussion leader
20 min – Follow up by Oscar
30 min – Q&A for clarification
30 min – Group discussion on the 3 questions from the discussion leader
