課程簡述 | This course examines contemporary literary theories since Structuralism. The course intends to introduce some fundamental concepts and important thinkers/theorists of structuralism, poststructuralism, Marxism, Psychoanalysis, feminism, ecocriticism, etc. Samples of works by important thinkers and philosophers of the last two centuries, i.e., Althusser, Freud, Lacan, Foucault, etc. will be read, discussed or reviewed. To give you a better sense of a theoretical tradition, we use Peter Barry’s Beginning Theory (2017) and, from time to time, Terry Eagleton’s Literary Theory: An Introduction (1983) to serve as a guideline and a map to help you locate the specific contributions each of the theorists brings to literary studies, and the dialogues among them. Given the amount of works and the complexity of each writer’s development of thoughts, our introductory readings will serve just as an initiation, rather than an entire tour, for your excursion. A few of the key concepts, like the revolutionary ideas of language, subject, discourse, power, ideology, etc., will cut across some of the readings on the list and become our on-going concerns. | ||||||||

Introduce important philosophers, critical theories, and terminology Foster Students’ critical ability Enhance students’ oral and written communication skills. All students are obligated to give THREE oral presentations. For those presentations you are expected to give a brief summary of the assigned readings, bring significant concepts into attention, unpack the essays, tease out the implied ideas, and raise questions for class discussion. For writers like Derrida, Freud, Lacan, Žižek, Foucault, etc., whose works cover all different theoretical grounds, a brief introduction of their works and major concepts is in order. All attendants are required to participate in the class discussion. Absence without leave or reasonable excuses is not allowed. There will be THREE response papers to the original works of major authors (600-800 words). |
