課程簡述 Mechanical properties are critically important to materials’ performance and lifetime in practical use. When components are used in load-bearing situations, mechanical properties such as strength, toughness, Young’s modulus, and fatigue often determine what material should be chosen and the lifetime of service. Even when the components are not used in load-bearing situations, such as in electronic, optoelectronic, communication-related, and biomedical applications, mechanical properties are often one of the parameters an engineer needs to consider. Accordingly, the course will mainly emphasize the deformation behavior of materials under stress. In addition, this course is a continuance following the “Mechanics of Materials” and “Physical Metallurgy” courses of the Materials Department. Students who consider taking this course for credit are encouraged (but not compulsory) to have taken the above two courses.
工業材料的機械性質常是實際應用時,決定材料性能與壽命的關鍵因素。當材料元件是直接應用在受力(Load Bearing)情況時,材料的機械性質例如:強度、韌性、楊氏模數、疲勞性質等材料相關參數,是決定選用何種材料及其使用壽命的要因;即使材料元件不是直接應用在受力情況,例如在電子、光電、通訊、生醫等應用領域,材料的機械性質也是材料設計者必須考慮的因素。本課程著重於材料在受力變形時的行為,並將延續材料系所開授的"材料力學"與"物理冶金"課程,考慮修習本課程的學生建議(非強制)先修習過前述課程。

The objective is to let students who take this course clearly understand materials’ mechanical properties such as strength, toughness, Young’s modulus, and fatigue under loading situations. We aim to instruct students on the knowledge of what materials’ deformation will be under loading stresses; how a reasonable lifetime in service can be estimated; how to select the appropriate materials and design material structures for specific applications.
課程目標是使同學明瞭材料元件在受力情況時,材料的機械性質例如:強度、韌性、楊氏模數、疲勞性質等,如何決定材料的變形行為及使用壽命;此外、如何選取合適材料及材料設計於特定使用場合。
