This two-semester course aims to strengthen students’ English writing proficiency by raising their awareness on how a good essay works and sharpening their skills in producing a typical five-paragraph essay that meets different purposes. |

20% Attendance and in-class performance
80% Writing task * 4
1. Attendance is mandatory; all absences must be excused, with notice in advance and verifiable excuses for absence.
2. Performance will be determined by students’ participation and overall effort in class.
3. For each writing task, students have to write an essay in response to a given issue or topic under time constraints in class.
4. All writings tasks are to be scored according to the essay’s organization, development of ideas, and accuracy of language.
