課程簡述 This course provides a foundational introduction to the microscopic structures and thermal properties of solid-state matter. Students will first explore crystal structures and spatial symmetries, followed by the study of wave diffraction and the reciprocal lattice to understand how X-rays probe atomic arrangements. The course then investigates the microscopic origins of crystal binding and cohesive energy. Finally, we will examine lattice vibrations and thermodynamic behaviors, focusing on the models of specific heat for crystalline solids.

By the end of this course, students will be able to: (1) Analyze and index standard crystal structures and spatial lattices using Miller indices. (2) Apply the concepts of the reciprocal lattice and Bragg's/Laue conditions to interpret wave diffraction patterns. (3) Evaluate the cohesive energy and chemical bonding mechanisms (e.g., ionic, covalent, metallic) in solids. (4) Model the temperature dependence of lattice specific heat using the classical, Einstein, and Debye approaches.
