課程簡述	「民族語言」的創造在世界各地的民族運動中佔有突出地位。本課程將從比較的角度研究二十世紀中國的「國語運動」及其規範現代書面語言和口語的努力。並探討各種因素如何塑造中國與亞洲不同國家的民族語言觀念，包括地區認同、階級政治、古代在國家形像中的作用、教育政策和掃盲運動、外語的影響、溝通的改善報紙和電報、語言學研究進展等。課程主要以中文講授，並以英文輔助，必須閱讀中文及英文相關論文，課程的執行方式，將包括課堂討論、簡短的講座和學生報告。評量標準為學生的課堂參與和個人研究論文。本課程前三週為林仁昱老師授課；第四週至第十五週為厚實學院計畫訪問教授德國萊比錫大學白莎(Elisabeth Kaske)教授，於12月1至4日，15至18日，共計8天，採每日3小時密集上課方式進行(8*3=24堂課，中文授課)，詳細時段將於第一週上課時，徵詢選課同學空堂後確定，第16週為國定假日。
