課程簡述	Along with the theoretical understanding of the soil science, this class provides students with the skillsets of analyzing basic soil properties, including physical (soil color, texture, bulk density, water content, compaction), chemical (soil pH, electrical conductivity, nutrients, organic matter), and biological (soil respiration) properties. Also, these soil physical variables are the fundamental knowledge for advancing digital agriculture for optimizing field management. This course will address the application in agronomy (e.g., food security) and environmental science (e.g. climate change) by the end of each lecture, which can be implemented in the final project.

週次 授課內容 第1週 Summer vacation 第2週 中秋節 第3週 Course overview 第4週 Soil color - Use the Munsell color system to identify and name soil colors of different horizons in soil profiles. 第5週 國慶日補假 第6週 Soil texture – Use particle-size analysis method (i.e., the hydrometer plus Stokes Law method) to analyze the particle distribution of soils. 第7週 Bulk density – Use the cylinder core sampled method to measure soil water content. 第8週 Soil moisture measurements and expression 第9週 Soil compaction – use a penetrometer to measure soil compaction. 第10週 Soil EC – Use EC meter and standard procedure to measure soil EC. 第11週 Soil pH – Use different extraction agents to measure soil pH using pH meters. 第12週 Mid-term overview 第13週 Nutrients analysis (soil phosphorus test) – use Bray No. 1 solution method to extract available soil P. The extracted soil P can react with ammonium molybdate to develop the ‘Molybdenum Blue color’, which can be measured colorimetrically using a spectrophotometer 第14週 Soil organic matter analysis 第15週 Nutrients analysis (soil potassium test) – Use 1 N NH4OAc to extract the exchangeable soil K, which can be measured using the flame atomic absorption spectrometer. 第16週 Oral presentation Soil respiration measurements Final discussion 自主學習 內容
