課程簡述	Biostatistics is the art of understanding patterns of behavior from data. Our data are usually a sample from a bigger population and we know that a different sample would have contained different data; so when we try to estimate some characteristic of the population from the data, we should recognize that different data would have given different estimates. This course starts with a brief overview of biostatistical issues in scientific investigations in which specific questions are of interest. We review some probability concepts and further introduce random variables and their properties. Then a range of exploratory data analytic methods for gaining insight into the sources of variations will be introduced. A general strategy for the statistical treatment of such problems will be developed, involving aspects of modeling, statistical inference, and conclusions.

This course concerns a number of methods that are frequently applied to areas of bioscience studies. They are probably the most often-used statistical tool for answering questions of bioscience data.

第1週	Introduction of the course
第2週	Introduction to biostatistics: cores/aims of biostatistics, descriptive and inferential statistics, populations and samples.
第3週	Sampling theory (I): variable vs observations, data types & measurement scales, data resources, data validity & reliability, measurement error, sampling, methods for probability/non-probability sampling, how to write a R-code for sampling..
第4週	Measurements: central tendency, dispersion.
第5週	Probability theory: concepts and properties of probabilities, random experiment, sample space, events, counting sample points, null event, outcome.
第6週	Discrete probability distributions (I): random variables, probability distribution, types of rv, discrete rv, continuous rv, expected values and variances of a probability distribution.
第7週	Discrete probability distributions (II): distribution choices, discrete Uniform, Bernoulli, Binomial, Negative Binomial, Geometric, Poisson, Hypergeometric distributions.
第8週	Continuous probability distributions: Uniform distribution, Normal distribution, t distribution, chi-square distribution, F distribution.
第9週	Midterm exam
第10週	Methods for outliers & missing data: most common causes of outliers, patterns of outliers, methods for outlier detection, forms of missingness, types of missing data, methods to deal with missing data.
第11週	Estimation: estimator; confidence intervals for normal means; estimating the mean and the variance; estimating the difference between two mean and between two proportions.
第12週	Tests of hypotheses: type I and II errors; testing hypotheses; one/two-tailed tests; tests concerning means/variances/proportions; goodness-of-fit test; test for independence.
第13週	Regression: linear regression and coefficients; prediction; multiple regression; GLMs.
第14週	Analysis of variance: concepts and rationale of ANOVA, factors to be considered, rules and assumptions of ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, model adequacy checking, why does the ANOVA work well?
第15週	Final exam
