課程簡述 This course is a two-semester, required one for DFLL students. Based on the foundation students have already acquired in the 1st yr. (paragraph writing), we will concentrate on essay writing. I intend to start this Fall with a review and a mutual understanding about what students have learned in English Composition (I). Then I will proceed to reach an agreement on the amount of assignment each week. The ultimate goal is to get students familiarized with different types of essays and with research paper mechanism for those interested students (optional).

第1週 Last semester’s final returned; to be revised with the instructor’s special instructions; exchange with your peer when the revision is done. Discuss the following topic: What is the so-called 校學士or院學士? Do you think it would be a good program?
第2週 Essay 1: A reflection on the university interdisciplinary bachelor degree innovation
第3週 Peer review and revision (focusing on diction & sentence pattern)
第4週 Grammar review 1
第5週 Essay 2: a cause and effect analysis on …(the increase of random attacks, hiking housing prices, etc.)
第6週 Peer review and revision
第7週 Holiday (last semester’s NCHU homecoming make-up rest day)
第8週 mid-term on IELTS writing task One (35 minutes)
第9週 mid-term returned & individual consultation in the classroom
第10週 Creative Essay 3: A dramatic monologue of (something or someone) following the example of Robert Browning or some other poets; E.g. 柯文哲, yourself, an ancient mirror, a dying person, etc. (Discussion first, followed by in-class writing)
第11週 Peer review and revision
第12週 Essay 4: A step-by-step guide to true happiness (Process analysis)
第13週 Peer review and revision
第14週 Final session on grammar; practice writing for the final
第15週 Peer review and suggestions
第16週 Final on IELTS writing Task Two (This semester no preparation time; exactly 40 mins and 250 words)

學習評量方式
1. 4 essays+ mid-term + final (including your progressive revision points & peer-review efforts) (80%). (Pay more attention to your revision. It involves not just editing, but sometimes also an entire structure change.)
2. Attendance+ participation: 20% (2% deduction for each absence or extreme tardiness. Active participation counts.)
3. Peer review performance instructions: (presentation of your comments, summarizing and critical thinking ability) E. g.: provided peers with specific, constructive written feedback: 0-5 pts; participated actively in discussion (spoken feedback) of each paper: 0-5 pts; wrote specific response to peers’ feedback: 0-5 pts. Be specific. Don’t write “You have done a good job” or “Your paper was interesting.” Reviewers please always sign your Chinese name.
4. If you want to convert my final grade to a letter grade, the following is the conversion chart American Universities usually adopt: A+ ≥95, A≥ 90, A-≥ 85-89, B+≥80-84, B ≥75-79, B-≥70-74, C≥65. D or F ≤60
