課程簡述	This course is designed to be student-centered and performance-based. In this semester, it will begin by familiarizing students with essential skills in expressing themselves and move on to equip them with effective strategies to conduct meaningful conversations. This course requires students to perform independent and interactive tasks by using these skills and strategies learned in class.

This one-year course aims to strengthen students’ English speaking proficiency by sharpening their skills in expressing opinions effectively and engaging in productive discussions on different academic occasions. After taking this course, students are expected to develop and deliver a personal opinion or a fact-based argument in a short amount of time. Meanwhile, they will learn strategies to conduct meaningful conversations and discussions. It is expected that these practices will also prepare students to meet the challenges of speaking tasks in standardized language tests.

15% Attendance and in-class performance (including evaluation of self-directed learning)

1. Attendance is mandatory, and all absences must be excused with advance notice and for verifiable reasons. All leaves will negatively impact the attendance score.
2. Students’ performance will be determined by their participation and overall effort in class. Students have the opportunity to earn extra credit by volunteering to respond to questions in class.
3. The Language Center at NCHU will administer a written English Proficiency Post-Test to be taken in class. The test assesses students’ listening and reading comprehension. Since this course primarily focuses on enhancing students’ speaking proficiency, students who wish to prepare for this test by taking the Freshman English course may want to explore alternative options.
4. Instead of having a midterm and a final exam, students are required to complete three tasks throughout the semester. Students who feel overwhelmed by the constant need to prepare for exams should consider exploring alternative courses at the same level.
5. The three tasks evaluate students’ speaking abilities both individually and in interactive settings.
— In the independent task, students are expected to summarize a short talk.
— In the interactive tasks, students are required to work with others in groups to complete designated tasks. The instructor will determine all groupings. Students who are not comfortable with this arrangement should reconsider enrolling in this course.
6. For the independent task, students will be evaluated based on the structure of their speech, the progression and development of their ideas, the unity and coherence of their thoughts, and their use of language. For the interactive tasks, students will be evaluated based on the structure, dynamics, content, unity, and coherence of their discussions.
